The store for all tastes

A huge new supermarket will allow workers shopping at lunchtime to choose from £700-a-bottle wines or oysters gathered from a remote Scottish loch as well as buying their regular supplies of bread and milk.

Customers will also be able to eat at one of six restaurants, including a sushi lounge and an oyster bar in the 75,000 square foot megastore.

There will also be plates of smoked salmon with scrambled egg on soda bread on sale for breakfast shoppers for £8.50, or Aberdeen Angus sirloin steaks, potato and onion rosti with poached egg and vine tomatoes for those coming in at night.

The Waitrose Food and Home complex in Canary Wharf will also offer relaxation and natural health treatments and remedies along with fitness and weight-loss books and videos, fashion items, home entertainment systems, computers and associated gadgetry.

The megastore, which opens next Tuesday, will also sell domestic products and be serviced by more than 750 staff.

Waitrose director of selling and marketing Mark Price said: "This is a huge development that is on the cutting edge and will change the way many people do things.

"It will be more than just pushing a trolley and buying your ketchup or whatever because you will be able to eat great food, drink expensive wine from an exclusive cellar as well as buy your normal goods.

"We have taken shopping to a new level and we think people are ready for it."

Mr Price said the store's normal food stuffs would sell for the same price as in other Waitrose shops but the Canary Wharf outlet would also cater for the "sophisticated consumer" among the tens of thousands of City bankers and financiers who work, live and play in the area.

He said: "I think they will find something in the cellar range from an £850 Bordeaux to a 1996 Chateau Petrus Pomerol for £550."

Store manager Roger Barrow said: "This will revolutionise shopping destinations. I was once told you couldn't buy a kettle in Canary Wharf, well now you can - and more."

The Waitrose Food and Home project has been in the planning stage for more than two years. Property managers have not said how much it cost but it is thought to be tens of millions of pounds.
