The road in Islington that is causing one L of a spelling problem

IT is the street name that Islington council and private landlords just do not seem able to spell correctly.

In fact almost the only people who can get it right are the residents of Hazellville Road, Hornsey Rise - and they say it is time the authorities bucked up their ideas.

Hazellville has four Ls, but nobody seems to have told Islington. The authority's signs in the road say: "Improving our streets -Hazelville Road completion spring 2009". Transport for London also seems to get it wrong. On the 41 bus, the digital screen that announces the stops calls it Hazel Ville Road.

Meanwhile, a block of flats is also incorrectly signposted 15 Hazelville Road. Cengiz Koc, 43, owner of Aladdin's Cave furniture store in the street, said: "Our customers often get it wrong when they write to us. But the council should be getting it right."

Resident Lynn Finch, 52, said: "You need to set the example to the children that spelling things right is important. They should stop and think - one L or two?"

Terry Stacy, deputy leader of Islington council, said: "We've just spent £200,000 replacing the road surface and pavement . We'll replace these signs - and have a word with our signmakers."
