The neighbour from hell

When "Mary" was moved into her new flat on the Woodberry Down estate in Hackney she thanked her lucky stars for the quiet neighbours. In fact the silence was because the upstairs tenant was in jail.

As soon as James Duberry was released he started smoking crack again on the estate. "It cost him ?100 a day, and it wasn't long before he ran out of money," said Keith Veness, the estate safety officer who helps run the Crackdown Project. "Because he was in debt to his dealers they took his flat over."

Other tenants had put up with the 54-year-old addict for seven years. After the law changed, police smashed down the door.
