'I get up, have a cup of tea and get dressed, and already I've exploited about 50 people,' laments 17-year-old Rowenna.

Ten months ago, Rowenna and her friends Melissa and Talia (both 17) decided they had to do more for the environment than boycott Nike and McDonald's. With the help of the Envision initiative, they formed EnTWINE (Environmentally the World is Not Enough), their own green team. They set about transforming the derelict garden at their Hampstead school, and began selling vegetarian food to fellow pupils to raise money for plants.

Success here has got them global recognition, and the girls have been invited to attend the World Summit in Johannesburg. 'We're going to be trekking in the mountains and sleeping under the stars,' they chant dreamy-eyed.

EnTWINE cohort, 18-year-old Olly, is a regular on the conference circuit - his uncle is a Green Party veteran. Olly's concerned that his political party suffers from branding issues. 'The Green Party has a terrible image because everybody thinks we're a load of tree-huggers.'

He insists that he's part of a new breed of trendy ecowarrior - Damon Albarn, not Swampy, is a pioneer for the new list of green icons. Given the chance to do Ken Livingstone's job, both EnTWINE and Olly say they'd make a fair few changes. Not having a bike would be illegal if Rowenna were mayor, and Talia would make recycling compulsory. Oh, and window boxes with flowers, too.

Later, Rowenna tells me she has something radical up her sleeve. She's saved £1,500 to plaster the capital with posters advertising environmental facts. 'I've always been a bit of an ecowarrior girl,' she admits.
