The burning bridge

These eerie, shimmering glass "flames" that change colour as the Thames tide ebbs and flows could become a new London landmark.

The 12metre-high glass, bronze and steel structures - described as "tidal flames" by their creator - will be set on top of stone plinths at each end of Wandsworth Bridge.

The internal lighting of the glass cones is computer-controlled and will be programmed to slowly change colour from red to yellow, in precise alignment with the tide tables.

As the tide rises the "flames" will subtly brighten and as it goes down again they will dim. Architect Steven Lenczner has presented his plans to Wandsworth council, to be incorporated into an ongoing redevelopment of the area.

Developers are transforming Battersea Reach, 13 acres of land next to the bridge, from a wasteland of DIY warehouses and car showrooms into a new zone boasting open spaces, a riverside walk, homes, shops, bars and restaurants. Mr Lenczner estimates the flames will cost around ?500,000 to build and install.

He said: "Throughout the last five years there has been a steady process of change to sites at each end of the bridge. While this has raised the profile of the area, it has exposed the banality of the bridge appearance itself.

"I drive across that bridge at least twice a day and it looks like the poor relation to London's other bridges. There's nothing in the city that reflects the tides and I want to do that. I also want to make people feel like they're actually crossing the Thames, rather than just driving on a motorway."

Wandsworth council will decide whether to grant planning permission later this week. If the vote is in favour, a further planning application will be made to Hammersmith and Fulham council where the other end of the bridge lies.

There is one significant snag that could yet snuff out the flames: no one has offered to pay for them. However, Mr Lenczner is hopeful of securing sponsorship.

Each cone will be made from 12 equal panes of frosted glass encircled by a spiral of bronze steel.

The height of the plinths on which they rest will lift the illuminated part of the cones above the sightline of motorists, to prevent their attention being distracted from the road.
