Thameslink calls last orders for 237-year-old Borough pub

A THRIVING pub in Borough is to close in January after 237 years as a viaduct for the Thameslink expansion is driven through its upper storeys.

The Wheatsheaf in Stoney Street was built on land given to the wardens of Southwark Cathedral in 1584 an 18th-century map shows the alley behind the pub was called "whores' nest". Regulars have now decided to celebrate the pub with a book to be launched on 4 November The Wheatsheaf 2001-2008. Landlord Tony Barry, 48, said: "We wanted to do something positive rather than crying." Profits will go to the charity Kids Company.
