Terrorist shouldn't have been in UK, say Tories

Labour faced a growing row over asylum today after it emerged that al Qaeda terrorist Kamel Bourgass should have been deported.

Algerian Bourgass had an asylum application rejected in 2001, but was able to remain in Britain using false names until he murdered Dc Stephen Oake in 2003. He moved between addresses and was able to claim benefits while pursuing his plot to poison Britons.

The Tories claimed today that the Government's asylum policy was in chaos and repeated their call for a border police force.

Spokesman David Davis said: "The murder of this policeman is a dreadful tragedy for his family and loved ones. It is also a tragedy because it should not have happened. This officer was killed by someone who should have been deported when his asylum application failed. This failure was a direct consequence of the Government's chaotic asylum policy and its porous borders."

Home Secretary Charles Clarke denied the case had embarrassed the Government. "This has to urge us on to find better ways of dealing with the threat that they have," he said.
