Teenager had been wearing headphones when train hit him

A teenager was killed by a train because he was listening to his MP3 player through headphones and did not hear it coming, his heartbroken family claimed today.

Promising film student Abid Rajah, 18, died when he tried to cross railway tracks at Forest Gate station in east London.

His family believe he was taking a short cut to the opposite platform and failed to notice the goods train because his music was too loud. The driver braked but could not stop in time. Abid died at the scene, just after midnight on April 13.

He had been on his way home to Stratford. The many tributes to the Newham Sixth Form College student on Facebook include one from his sister, Ruby, who revealed he had been wearing headphones and urged other people to "stay safe".

An inquest has been opened and adjourned at Walthamstow coroner's court. Police are not treating the death as suspicious.
