MEDICAL devices group Smith & Nephew recently posted second-quarter results below expectations. However, its core orthopaedics arm should benefit from strong growth in the sector with the ageing of the baby boomer generation. Buy at 478.5p.

CAR accessories retailer Halfords has good growth prospects - over the last two years its management team has increased sales and margins and launched new product ranges. Refurbishments and expansion plans should boost same-store sales by 7% in 2005 and 2006. Buy at 263.5p.

DRUGS company Pharmagene is recovering from seeing its shares dive to a low of 39p in June. It is to report results of phase two trials for its cystic fibrosis product by the end of the year, while products for irritable bowel syndrome and migraine will move into phase one. Investors with an appetite for a volatile share should buy at 52.5p.

The Business

BAKER Greggs last week continued its decade of unbroken profits growth, with sales of sandwiches and other savoury products growing fastest. It is possible that the recent humid weather could slow growth, but Greggs is set for another positive outcome this year. A long-term buy at 3405p.

VEHICLE telematics business Cybit Holdings creates systems for satellite navigation, fleet management and mobile workforce tracking. Last year it moved into the black and is slowly expanding into Europe, winning a first contract in Germany. Buying now at 1.52p could reap long-term rewards.
