Straw's son wins Oxford presidency

William Straw, son of Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, has beaten two rivals to be elected president of the Oxford University Students' Union.

.William, 21, in his final year studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics at New College, beat a Liberal Democrat and a single-issue candidate campaigning to save the Oxford MA - the honorary degree given to all Oxford graduates. He will take up the post in June.

His father was president of the students' union at Leeds in the late Sixties, and then president of the National Union of Students, before he entered political life as an Islington councillor.

William's main claim to fame until now was - while still at school in Pimlico - a police caution for selling cannabis to an undercover reporter.
