Storm misery for asthmatics

Recent thunderstorms are thought to have triggered a surge in the number of asthma attacks.

Storms can whip pollen and other allergens into the air which irritate the lungs of vulnerable people.

More storms are expected in the South-East tonight and tomorrow.

The Met Office is now working with health experts to predict when storms may hit and give warnings to asthma and hayfever sufferers. Dr Rosemary Leonard, who has a practice in Dulwich, said: "I have seen more asthma sufferers in the last week or so than I would see in winter.

"The humidity means air quality goes down. This can really set off asthmatics." She suggested sufferers consider talking to their doctor about increasing the use of preventative inhalers and staying indoors in the evening when pollen levels are highest.

Air pollution, exposure to chemicals or tobacco also contribute to asthma problems.

Up to 15 per cent of the population suffers from asthma. An increase in the number in the last 10 years has been attributed to air pollution, car exhaust fumes and spending more time inside.
