Star's ex-wife in death quiz

The ex-wife of Arsenal star Tony Adams is being questioned by police today after a dead woman was found in her car.

Jane Shea, 38, was sitting in her black BMW in Fulham when a passing police patrol spotted the body slumped in the back seat.

Miss Shea and a man who was also in the car were arrested at the scene and taken to a police station. The body of the woman, whose identity has not been confirmed, was taken to hospital.

Police are investigating the possibility that she died of a drugs overdose. She is believed to be known to Miss Shea and her friend.

Adams, 37, was said to be "devastated" by the arrest. He is thought to be caring for the couple's two children, eight-year-old Amber and Oliver, 11.

Miss Shea separated from the former Arsenal and England captain in 1997.

They were married for five years in a relationship beset with problems caused by his alcoholism and her addiction to cocaine. During that time Adams adopted Clare, Miss Shea's 19-year-old daughter from a previous partner. Adams, now teetotal, lives with 29-year-old Poppy Teacher. The couple had a son, Atticus, in February.

Miss Shea and her friend were arrested in De Morgan Road at around 11.20pm on Monday.

Police said today they were still being held in custody in connection with the incident.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Inquiries into the incident continue.

"We believe we know the identity of the deceased, but we are awaiting formal identification. A post mortem examination will follow."

After her arrest police searched Miss Shea's flat in Putney and took away several items.
