He said: “Mr Best moved in at the end of January 2012. He said that he had treated the house as his own since 2001. There had been no disputes about his possession of the property. But he occupied it without anyone’s consent.”
A neighbour who has lived in the street for 15 years told the Standard: “He shouldn’t be able to take a house, he has mugged off the system.
“If it’s that easy to get a house then more people will do it, he won’t be the first and certainly not the last.”
Mr Best refused to comment following yesterday’s decision, which has cost the registrar an estimated £200,000 in legal fees.
LABOUR today said it would try to push through a ban on fees charged to tenants when renting a property.
Ed Miliband said his party would force a Commons vote on Tuesday which could outlaw the fees charged by letting agents. He told the BBC: “If you buy a house you don’t get charged fees but if you rent a house you do.
“At the same time the landlord’s being charged and the tenant’s being charged. We will ban those fees.”
