Sophia still turns heads at 69

Ever since she won a beauty contest at the age of 14, Sophia Loren has turned heads wherever she goes.

And although her 70th birthday is approaching in September, she has no intention of becoming the shy, retiring type.

Stepping out at a party in Germany, she dazzled onlookers with her dress, her smile, and her still stunning figure.

'She became the centre of attention without even trying,' said one fellow guest.

La Loren, who has made 100 films and borne two sons, has often given thanks for her decision not to obey demands to have a nose job and hip reduction when she was starting out on her career more than 50 years ago.

'Everything I have,' she once said when referring to her voluptuous curves, 'I owe to spaghetti.'

People Magazine added its own verdict in 1999 by dubbing her 'one of the world's most stunning and ageresistant women'.

Born the illegitimate Sofia Scicolone in Rome in 1934, she survived a tough childhood in which food was so scarce that her stick- like frame earned her the nickname Stuzzicadente, or toothpick, in the school playground.

But those early cruelties, hardships and bitter real-life scenes were to reward her in 1961 when she won an Oscar for her portrayal of a wartime rape victim in the film Two Women.

Almost 30 years later the Academy was honouring her again for a lifetime of achievement which included films such as Boy On A Dolphin, The Pride And The Passion, El Cid, Marriage Italian Style and more latterly Grumpier Old Men - not that her co-stars Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau can have had much to be grumpy about.

Asked about her ageless beauty, she once declared: 'I still like me inside and out. Not in a vain way - I just feel good in my skin.'
