Soldier uses battlefield skills to save Oxford Street knife victim

A soldier told how he saved the life of a teenager who was stabbed amid a crowd of horrified shoppers in Oxford Street.

Sapper Francis "Frankie" Fenwick-Wilson, 21, was about to catch the bus home when he saw an 18-year-old boy slumped outside the H&M store following a double stabbing.

He used battlefield training to tend to the boy's multiple wounds until an ambulance arrived yesterday afternoon.

Sapper Fenwick-Wilson, of 25 Engineer Regiment based in Cambridge, said the boy, called Jerome, had injuries similar to those caused by explosive devices in Afghanistan. He said: "There was a black kid slumped on the pavement. His girlfriend was hysterical. He was hammering blood from his neck and from behind his ear. He had about six stab wounds, to his stomach, ribs, under his armpit.

"I just jumped straight in and took my shirt off. I used the first aid training we have for Afghanistan. It's exactly the same.

"Apart from the two big ones the stab wounds were like the IED wounds you get in Afghanistan."

The teenager is in a serious but stable condition in a central London hospital. He and another teenager have been arrested.

Sapper Fenwick-Wilson's fiancée Amber Bainbridge, 19, said: "I am so, so proud of him. He saved a life today."
