Smuggler, 12, swallows heroin

A boy of 12 who swallowed 87 packets of heroin to smuggle them on a flight from London to New York is recovering in hospital today.

The child arrived alone in New York on a British Airways flight on Wednesday night, police said. He suffered severe stomach pains after taking a taxi from LaGuardia airport and was rushed to New York hospital in Queens.

His arrest, which comes two days after 13-year-old girl was charged with smuggling nearly £1 million worth of heroin into Britain, is the latest development in the intern ational drugs trade blighting major cities such as London.

Increasingly, children and women are being used to smuggle drugs, as dealers believe they have less chance of being stopped by Customs.

The 12-year-old boy, who is a US citizen but has been living with relatives in Nigeria for two years, was in a stable condition today after most of the packets were removed. He was charged with juvenile delinquency and possession of a controlled substance.

Drug mules from Jamaica bring in as much as £2 million of cocaine a week through London airports. One woman was found to have swallowed 94 packages.

Last year one was found dead near a Balham graveyard after packages of cocaine burst in his stomach. Police believe he became severely disorientated and suffered a heart attack.
