Smart CCTV trial on Tube

A hi-tech surveillance camera which could revolutionise security systems around the world is to have its first trial on the Tube.

The system spots trouble automatically and alerts operators to anything from a suspect package to a suicide.

It is to be fitted at Liverpool Street and Mile End stations in a pilot project which could lead to installation on all 6,000 of the Tube's CCTV cameras - and millions worldwide.

The system works by comparing the live image with ones from the empty station, and tracking people or objects which it spots. It can pick out unusual behaviour - for example it "knows" that people-attempting suicide often wait on the platform and let a few trains pass before they jump. The software then alerts operators, who often have to monitor a bank of up to 60 screens.

Installation expert Peter Tollington said: "CCTV itself is fantastic, but this puts it on another plane. It means that you don't have to look at a screen all of the time."
