Sleep's nightmare

There was no way he was going to tap-dance through this one.

In fact, Wayne Sleep had to get down on his hands and knees and crawl during his challenge on I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.

But that wasn't the half of it. The 54-year- old dancer had to get though a rat run containing 300 of the hungry rodents with portions of waffles - their favourite food - strapped to his head and body.

Sleep had been voted to do the Bushtucker Trial by viewers of the ITV1 jungle adventure.

Success would have earned meals for him and the nine other celebrity contestants camped out in the Australian rainforest.

His task was to collect ten keys to open a box and find a starshaped token while the rats crawled all over him. But he collected only two, along with a selection of bites and scratches.

'I feel icky and dreadful - the rats were scratching me and pulling my glasses off,' he said afterwards. 'Every time I made a move, they'd jump on my back and head.

'I'm usually good at what I do. It was a mish-mash of rubbish on my part not to find the keys. I feel dreadful going back to camp. I'm very disappointed and they (the team) will be as well.'

He could say that again. A hungry night was the last thing needed to repair the crumbling camaraderie in the camp. In fact, after only three days the programme is danger of turning into I'm a Celebrity, Let Me Bitch.

Last night, Sleep and Sian Lloyd, followed Danniella Westbrook's lead in airing their grievances with other members of the group.

Tensions first surfaced on Tuesday night, when Miss Westbrook told producers she was losing patience with a contestant - whom she refused to name.

The 29-year-old ex-EastEnders star revealed her outburst to Sleep after he grumbled: 'I find with some people it's lights, camera, action. It's driving me crazy.'

Conscious of being overheard, the pair moved out of earshot of the rest of the group, but were soon joined by weather girl Miss Lloyd - who confessed camp life is wearing on her as well.

Sleep moaned: 'I can't believe how people's egos are so incredible. It's just so tiring.'

Miss Westbrook replied: ' Sometimes, I just have to bite my lip because otherwise it will just end up in a fight - but I'm finding it very frustrating.'

Miss Lloyd congratulated her for being able to hold her tongue, but Sleep wanted to keep on sniping.

'I have never known men with such egos,' he said, without revealing who was in his sights.

'It's not just the men, believe you me,' said Miss Lloyd.

Changing Rooms designer Linda Barker escaped the snide comments, with everyone agreeing how much they liked her.

Miss Westbrook also revealed that her friend, model Catalina Guirado, had annoyed her by sprinkling precious salt - meant to be used for dealing with leeches and not for cooking - on her food.

Sleep hinted that chef Antony Worrall Thompson was getting on his nerves by dictating how much rice should be eaten, adding: 'We're not on Ready Steady Cook - we're on a safari.' He also grumbled that some of the team are being false.

'I thought you were meant to come here and be yourself. People are scared to even talk. People came in with their roles all ready.'

Miss Lloyd said: 'I have silenced myself in a way I would not do normally,' before revealing her own frustrations. 'I've reached the stage where I don't care,' she added and uttered a curse.

The celebrities also found time for soul-sharing. Miss Westbrook spoke of her 14-year drug addiction, which rotted part of her nose.

'I was told by the doctor that I had two weeks to live,' she said. 'I was on anti- depressants, but there was nothing left in my system and my body gave up on me.' Meanwhile, Worrall Thompson - who sent a secret love message to his wife by writing it on his arm in charcoal - discussed his sleepwalking, which stemmed from strained relations with his alcoholic father.

The celebrities' spirits were bolstered when a musical extravaganza they staged so impressed the producers that they were given a bottle of wine and a packet of chocolate buttons.

Toyah Wilcox belted out Cabaret with a chorus line made up of the rest of the group, who had been allowed by the producers to paint each others' faces.

Sleep performed a solo tap spectacular, although he wasn't convinced that it was any more impressive than his attempt to win the Bushtucker Trial.
