Six Pitcairn men found guilty of sex attacks

Six Pitcairn islanders were today found guilty of raping and indecently assaulting girls as young as 12 after a trial on the South Pacific island.

But their victims, who testified via video from New Zealand, said they were treated as "sex things" as girls and raped at will.

The men were tried for 55 sex attacks, stretching back 40 years, on women and girls on the island which has a permanent population of only 47.

They will be sentenced this week but will not be jailed until next year at the earliest because of legal wrangling over whether Britain still has jurisdiction over the island.

British High Commission spokesman Bryan Nicolson in New Zealand said: "Six of the seven have been found guilty."

Among those found guilty was Steve Christian, Pitcairn's mayor, who was convicted of five rapes and a number of sexual assaults. Christian, 53, who claims descent from mutiny leader Fletcher Christian, was described as the "leader of the pack" who believed he had a right to have sex with young girls.

His son, Randy Christian was convicted of four rapes and five indecent assaults.

Another man, 78-yearold Len Brown, was convicted of two rapes, and his son, Dave Brown, of nine indecent assaults.

Dennis Christian was convicted of one indecent assault and two sexual assaults he pleaded guilty to at trial. Terry Young was convicted of one rape and six indecent assaults. Jay Warren, the island's magistrate, was cleared of indecent assault.

Some islanders fear for Pitcairn's economy if the men are jailed as many of them operate the boats that pick up supplies from passing ships.

The men say British sovereignty ended when the mutineers sank the Bounty in 1790. They will present their case to the Privy Council.
