Six die in weekend violence

Six people were killed and another man is fighting for his life in hospital today following a number of unconnected attacks over the Jubilee weekend.

In three gangland-style attacks one man was gunned down in a pub, another was shot in the neck and a third is in a critical condition after being shot in the back of the head.

The celebrations in central London passed off peacefully but the number of violent incidents over the holiday period has shocked detectives. One officer said: "It's rare to have this number of killings over a single weekend. The last time I remember such levels of violence was when four people were killed on New Year's Day."

In Barking a 37-year-old man who had just finished a karaoke song was shot in the White Horse pub on London Road. Two men, described as white and aged about 40, burst in and started beating him. He was then shot at pointblank range in front of horrified drinkers at 9pm on Saturday night.

Detectives from Operation Trident - the Met unit dedicated to fighting black-on-black gun crime - are investigating a shooting in Tottenham. The victim, in his late twenties, was shot in the neck at a flat in Moselle Street late on Saturday night. He died in hospital. Police are hunting two black men seen running from the address but they believe there were other witnesses.

In Brockley a man of 27 was shot once in the back of the head on Monday evening. He was taken to hospital where his condition is critical.

In Tilbury, police received reports of a serious fight outside the New Calcutta Club at about 11pm on Monday. Officers found a man and a woman both suffering from stab wounds and the body of father of three Charlie Billingsley, who had been celebrating his 43rd birthday, lying behind a parade of shops.

In Orpington, kebab shop workers Adnan Hussein, 30, Hasan Kebene, 35, and Hassan Burunlu, 25, have been charged with murder after 33-year-old Tony Else was found lying in the High Street with head and arm injuries. He died in hospital early on Sunday.

In another incident in Brockley, a 46-year-old woman was found dead having suffered serious head injuries at an address in Wickham Road. A post mortem revealed she died from multiple injuries. Police have charged Ronald Napier, 48, with murder.

Detectives are treating the death of a black man, aged in his late twenties to early thirties and found lying in an alley in Limehouse, as suspicious. A post mortem is being carried out.
