Single camera raises £1.2m in traffic fines for council

One traffic enforcement camera has generated £1.2 million in fines in a year.

The CCTV camera at the junction of Tysoe Street and Rosoman Street in Islington triggered more than 10,800 tickets for drivers parking illegally or carrying out banned turns last year.

The second most costly spot for motorists in the borough was the Islington end of Liverpool Road - where drivers were hit with CCTV fines worth £998,420. In total, fixed cameras pointed at the borough's roads recorded more than £7.6 million in fines from a total of 68,000 tickets - equivalent to one fine every eight minutes.

Campaigner Barrie Segal, who runs the Appealnow.com website, said: "The public will take the view that it is a money-making exercise."

RAC spokesman Jon Day added: "It's the responsibility of motorists to obey the rules of the road but money should be ploughed back into the roads."

The figures, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, showed that the 31 fixed CCTV cameras caught drivers parking illegally, straying into bus lanes, making illegal turns or stopping on box junctions on about 90 different roads. The £7.6 million in fines issued by fixed CCTV cameras was just part of the total pot of cash Islington demanded from motorists. The authority handed out £12.5million in fines last year from parking wardens and camera cars.

A council spokesman said: "Banned turns are intended to improve traffic flows and road safety on major routes like Rosebery Avenue. This camera capturing banned turns at this busy junction was accompanied by the correct signage so these tickets are valid."
