'Set up prisons for pensioners'

The Government should consider setting up "nursing home jails" for elderly inmates, a study says today.

The Prison Reform Trust claims the Prison Service fails to provide adequate healthcare for prisoners over 60, the BBC reports.

Over-60s make up the fastest-growing age group in England and Wales, with 1,200 inmates - three times the number a decade ago.

The campaign group argues that steep rises in numbers have left the prisons struggling to deal with the health problems of the elderly.
