Serjeant's fate divides MPs

A battle has broken out between MPs over attempts to modernise the Commons in the wake of the flour bomb attack on Tony Blair.

Labour modernisers are calling for a complete overhaul with the appointment of a security chief but this has split MPs and outraged traditionalists. The Commons has run its own affairs for 600 years and security is overseen by the Serjeant at Arms, who still wears ceremonial dress and a sword. Commons Leader Peter Hain called for an end to the "old-fashioned culture of security" at Parliament after the attack.
