Security chaos at Parliament

London today faced the prospect of traffic chaos over plans to improve security at the Houses of Parliament.

The changes could see the road in front of the House of Commons closed, with traffic diverted from Millbank around the north side of Parliament Square.

It could also see cars banned from driving in front of Big Ben - possibly leading to the closure of Westminster Bridge. Home Secretary David Blunkett today said he would consult Mayor Ken Livingstone, the Commons authorities and security agencies about the recommendations.

The proposals follow warnings that Parliament remains vulnerable to a terrorist attack.

The announcement comes as a review of Commons security was handed to the Speaker, Michael Martin. It has been passed to the House of Commons Commission for a response in the next few weeks.
