Second fatal collision at cycle route roundabout

Campaigners have called on Boris Johnson to take action over a Cycle Superhighway blackspot after two cyclists died on the roundabout in three weeks.

Brian Dorling was killed as he crossed Bow Junction on his way to work on October 24.
A 34-year-old woman, known only as Lana, died at the same junction after she collided with a white DAF tipper truck at about 4.45pm on Friday.

The driver, aged 29, was arrested and bailed on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.
Mr Dorling's widow, Debra, today said she had written to the Mayor begging him to change the road layout. The mother-of-three said: "When I first heard another person had been killed I thought, 'I can't believe this'.

"When we went for the reconstruction of my husband's accident you could see how dangerous it was. I told the chief engineer who was with us, 'Someone else is going to die.'

"You can't have big lorries and cyclists sharing such a dangerous space. People are quick to blame the cyclist. But Brian was a very good cyclist and it is only natural to follow the blue cycle path, so you do and then you end up in problems."

Campaigners have called on Transport for London to redesign the junction. London Cycling Campaign chief executive Ashok Sinha said: "We can't understand how this junction can form part of what is one of the Mayor's flagship cycling projects."

A spokesman for Mr Johnson said the Mayor's thoughts were with the family and friends of the cyclist killed on Friday.

He added: "The police are investigating the circumstances and TfL have launched their own investigation, which will report back to the Mayor as quickly as possible."
