SCi now the front-runner for Eidos

ELEVATION Partners, the company backed by rock star Bono of U2, looks unlikely to increase its offer for troubled computer game publisher Eidos, creator of the Lara Croft Tomb Raider series.

Rival publisher Sci, headed by Jane Cavanagh, right, is poised to win the backing of another major shareholder in the battle for control of the company.

After securing the backing of more than 30 per cent of Eidos shareholders, including 22 per cent investor Schroders, for its six-for-one share offer, Sci's offer is expected to be accepted by American fund manager Taube Hodson, which holds eight per cent, said City sources.

Elevation Partners started the bidding war by offering 50p a share in cash for Eidos last month, but is unlikely to raise its bid, despite attacking Sci's ability to deliver value.

But Rob Murphy, finance director of Sci, said: 'We can rescue Lara Croft. We have £60 million to invest and shareholders will share in the benefit.'
