Schizophrenic killer 'slipped through system'

Film director Jane Campion said a British-born art curator was killed because his mentally ill son "slipped through a gap in the system" in Australia.

Anthony Waterlow was today found not guilty of murdering his father, Nick Waterlow, and his sister, Chloe Heuston.

A New South Wales supreme court judge said that Waterlow, 44, was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia when he killed his father, Nick, 68, and sister, Chloe, 37 during a family dinner in Sydney in November 2009. Nick Waterlow, who was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, was a celebrated art curator who did everything possible to help his son but was afraid of his violent mood swings.

Outside court, family friend Campion, who directed the Oscar-winning movie The Piano, called for an overhaul of the mental health system in Australia, which allowed Waterlow to go untreated.
