Saudi diplomat's 'trial by media'

A Saudi diplomat accused of a sex attack on an 11-year-old girl is facing "trial by media", the country's ambassador to Britain complained today.

The 41-year-old man, who has not been named, was arrested and taken to a police station over the allegations, but police were forced to release him after he claimed diplomatic immunity.

However, Ambassador Prince Turki Al-Faisal insisted that the Saudi embassy is co-operating with the police in an effort to establish the truth about the claims.

Interviewed on an unrelated matter on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme, the ambassador was asked why the embassy had not co-operated with the authorities.

He said: "That is not the case. We are co-operating fully with the authorities. The diplomatic sovereignty issue is an issue that is not for me, or for you, or for anybody else to dispute.

"We are working with your authorities closely on that issue. We are co-operating closely with them, and we want to reach the truth. There are issues about this situation where he is being tried in the media and we think that that is unfair.

"We are closely working with your police authorities on that issue. We are offering all of our co-operation on that and there is absolutely nothing else that we can do about it."

The ambassador was asked whether he was allowing the diplomat to be questioned by the police, and whether, if they decided there was a charge to be brought against him, he would be willing to waive diplomatic immunity so that he could be tried in Britain.

The ambassador responded: "What I can tell you is that we will work with your police to reach the truth about this situation."

Pressed on whether he was prepared for the diplomat to be questioned by the British authorities, he said: "I will say that to the police and to the authorities here and not to you."
