Row over inmate's holiday plans

A violent drug dealer whose jail sentence was cut short after an EC ruling is planning to spend his £8,000 compensation on a Caribbean holiday.

Spencer Edwards, 32, had 233 days added to his three-year sentence for heroin dealing because of his violent record behind bars.

That punishment was cut short after a ruling stripped governors of their powers to add extra days to sentences. One-legged Edwards of Bootle, Merseyside, is set to receive a payout of almost £8,000 for the extra days he served.

He said: "I'm going to take my partner and our two boys on holiday. Probably to the Caribbean."

Prison chiefs have branded his early release "obscene".
