Roman's villa

It is the estate that has been dubbed "Sussexski" - a small corner of ultra-rich Russia amid England's rolling hills.

And little wonder: Roman Abramovich has been stamping his personality on the Fyning Hill Estate ever since he bought it from Australian media mogul Kerry Packer.

The Russian billionaire has completed one stage of development at his £12 million, 24-acre estate near Petersfield, West Sussex, and a second will be ready soon.

The building on the right of our main picture houses a pool, sauna and lavishlyequipped gym, so visiting Chelsea players won't be able to blame the boss for getting out of shape. There is also a go-kart track and rif le range.

But Mr Abramovich has also been thinking about his less-sporty visitors. He has demolished one of the houses on the estate, a nondescript 1920s building, and is replacing it with one in the style of Edwardian architect Sir Edwin Lutyens.

This guest house will be as quintessentially English as the games of polo Mr and Mrs Abramovich have been learning to play.

According to architects Douglas Briggs Partnership, the guest house's sloping roofs, tall chimneys, materials and methods of construction will be familiar in the locality.

The materials include green oak, colourwash plaster, local stock brick, handmade plain clay tiles, natural oak doors and heavy lead flashings and dressings.
