Rocket grenade kills 3 reporters

Three journalists were killed in a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan when the armoured personnel carrier they were sitting on was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

Two French women, including radio reporter Johanne Sutton, 34, and a male journalist working for a German magazine, fell from the vehicle when it came under fire. They were accompanying a Northern Alliance commander on an inspection of a Taliban trench which they thought had surrendered, when the attack happened.

Sydney Morning Herald reporter Paul McGeough said he was among six reporters on the vehicle when it was hit. The vehicle turned suddenly. "Three of us clung on for grim death and we survived," he said.

The bodies were later recovered by Northern Alliance troops.
