Revenue in Wembley tax probe

INLAND Revenue agents are investigating an alleged tax fiddle among contractors working on the Wembley National Stadium project.

A source said that a gangmaster who provided workers for subcontractors was a major target for scrutiny.

'He has provided hundreds of workers and always makes them sign up as self-employed,' said the source. They are paid cash and told tax is 50%, with him pocketing the difference. This is a huge scam that has involved hundreds of workers and millions of pounds.'

Tory industry spokesman Michael Fabricant said: 'Public money is being spent here. If the allegations are true, this has serious consequences for the project.'

? Multiplex, the prime contractor on the Wembley project, said last week that it expected only to break even after a row with Cleveland Bridge, the firm responsible for the stadium's huge metal arch.

There is no suggestion that Multiplex is involved in tax evasion probe.
