'Resistance party' at Guy Ritchie squat: Defiance after judge grants eviction order

Squatters occupying Guy Ritchie's new home vowed to hold a "celebration of creative resistance" today after a judge ordered them to leave.

Nine of them arrived at City of London county court yesterday wearing Vinnie Jones masks.

They were told to vacate the £6 million central London property belonging to the director - who cast Jones in several of his films - by 6.30pm today.

District Judge Marc Dight granted an interim eviction order and set a full hearing for next Friday.

The Really Free School collective later posted plans on their website for a "massive street soiree" featuring music, games and dance from 6pm today.

They were represented in court by first-year law student Tom Brianmurray, who claimed the eviction notice had not been placed properly and asked for more time to prepare a defence.

When he revealed he was a law student, Judge Dight said: "You could have told me that to begin with." He rejected the students' legal arguments and found that Mr Ritchie had the right to take back his 1790s property in Fitzroy Square, designed by Robert Adam.

"The claimant has made me aware that the building is being renovated and having asbestos removed," said Judge Dight. "The obvious fall-out from the occupation is that the renovation has been unable to go ahead.

"I'm told the floorboards are unsafe, with holes in the floor, and there is no water, no heating, no lavatory and limited electricity. There is no access to outside and I am led to believe there are no sanitary facilities whatsoever, presenting severe health risks to the occupiers."

Michael Buckpitt, on behalf of Mr Ritchie, told the court he would not serve the order until 6.30pm tonight.
