Rail crash families fight for more compensation

Families of the victims of the Potters Bar rail crash have vowed to continue their fight for compensation after it emerged some are likely to receive less than £10,000 each.

Relatives of the seven dead were paid that amount - the legal minimum payout for victims with no dependants - soon after the crash.

They are now considering going back to court to win more from Railtrack's successor, Network Rail, and track repair firm Jarvis. The tragedy in 2002 happened when a West Anglian Great Northern train from London to King's Lynn came off the tracks. Seven people died and 76 were injured. The derailment has been blamed on poor points maintenance.

Louise Christian, the lawyer representing five families, said: "We are preparing cases to challenge offers being made."
