RAF base to lose rescue helicopters

The RAF base which played a key role in lifesaving operations in the Cornish flood village of Boscastle is to lose its rescue helicopters and may be closed down in new defence cuts.

A yellow Sea King helicopter from RAF St Mawgan, 20 miles away, played a starring role in the disaster as it plucked dozens

of trapped people from trees, roofs and windows.

Paul Tyler, MP for the stricken village, said that if the flood had happened after the cuts "it could have cost lives".

The helicopters are to be moved to Anglesey - about 90 minutes' flying time from Boscastle.
