Radio art plays to the tune of visitors' shadows

AN art gallery has been transformed into a huge interactive sculpture that uses visitors' bodies as radio antennae.

Tracking devices follow visitors around The Curve at the Barbican, using their position to set the tuning and volume of 48 radios.

Visitors' shadows are cast on the gallery's curving wall. The outline of the shadow determines the frequency used while its size controls the volume.

Speakers broadcast the stations picked up on FM, AM, short wave, television, DAB, weather and amateur radio, as well as sounds from radio astronomy and low earth orbit satellite. Frequency And Volume is the first public UK show by Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer.
