Racehorse owner Robert Sangster dies at 67

Robert Sangster, the legendary racehorse owner, has died, aged 67.

Mr Sangster used an inheritance from Vernons pools to fund a series of astute business deals, but it was as a buyer and seller of racehorses that he really prospered. Shortly before his death, following a long battle against cancer, he was estimated to be worth around £110million, with houses in Mustique, the South of France, and a 2,000-acre estate in Wiltshire.

In recent years he had adopted a lower profile, but in the Seventies and Eighties he was a flamboyant character, as famous for his torrid private life as his brilliant business acumen.

He was linked to a string of glamorous women, including author Tara Moss, Australian socialite Susan Renouf and Jerry Hall. The couple split after a year-long affair in 1984, shortly after Mick Jagger was introduced to the Texan model.

In 2000, he divorced his third wife Susan Lilley, with whom he had two children. He had four children by his first wife Christine Street.
