£5m plan to restore Victorian grandeur of busy streetscape

More open space could be created in Notting Hill Gate with a plan to redevelop the street and reduce clutter.

Kensington and Chelsea council is planning to remove bollards and metal signposts, and possibly erase some road markings.

It hopes the scheme will realise the grand Victorian scale of the area.

There is also a possibility of shared road use between pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

The scheme is expected to cost about £5 million and initial discussions on the project follow the success of a similar transformation of Kensington High Street.

Separate plans have been drawn up for Exhibition Road, including the removal of pavements to be replaced by a single road surface. There will be one York stone and granite surface for the whole road, with cars confined to the eastern side. Other locations being looked at include Golborne Road and Ladbroke Grove.

A council statement said: "The continued expansion of the streetscape improvement programme demonstrates the council's commitment to improving the public realm for residents and those who work in or visit the borough."
