£11bn forked out on ready meals

Britons are spending more than £11 billion every year on prepared food, some of which they pass off as their own, according to new research.

Dinner party culture is booming across the country, with more than 313 million social gatherings held at home every year, making Britain one of the most sociable countries in Europe.

In France, only 220 million home gatherings a year take place, according to a report by market analysts Datamonitor. Britain is the third most sociable country in Europe after Italy and Germany and may even overtake the Italians within five years, according to the report.

But while Britons may be top at throwing parties, their main motivation is impressing their guests - even if it means cheating. The report says: "For many consumers showing off is a primary motivation for hosting gatherings. Many also stated that appearance was more important than quality and that they are seeking a 'wow factor' from their guests.

"Consumers are increasingly willing to accept help from convenience solutions, although they are keen for products that can be passed off as home cooked."

On average each social gathering costs the host £40.67, from the scented candles to the preprepared wild mushroom risotto.

Marketing analyst Neil Broome said: "Media attention to all things culinary, be it the celebrity chef or the glossy food mag, has made cooking cool. It has gone beyond being a hobby for only those with the skill - manufacturers have taken the hard work out of gourmet goods."
