Protesters pledge 'new revolution' in Tahrir Square

Egyptians flooded Tahrir Square again today as activists called for a million-man march in Cairo and promised a "second revolution".

As the violence that erupted at the weekend entered a fourth day, fighting spread to the eastern city of Ismailia where three people were killed in clashes with security forces.

At least 33 people have died in unrest since the weekend. The resignation last night of Egypt's civilian cabinet appeared to have spurred the protesters today who gathered in larger numbers than previous days.

They hoisted a giant Egyptian flag and chanted for the "fall of the marshal" - referring to Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the head of the army council. Tantawi was Hosni Mubarak's defence minister for two decades until the authoritarian ruler was toppled by popular protests in February.

Amnesty International today attacked the military rulers in a new report, claiming they had "completely failed to live up their promises to Egyptians to improve human rights".

The London-based group demanded the repeal of Mubarak-era "emergency laws", expanded to cover "thuggery" and criticising the military. It said the army has placed arbitrary restrictions on media. Security forces have continued to use torture against demonstrators, the report added.
