Princess flees to escape paparazzi

Princess Madeleine of Sweden has fled London after being hounded by paparazzi, saying she was "unable to live like a normal girl".

The 19-year-old, third in line to the throne, arrived to learn English three months ago and begged press photographers to leave her alone. She is viewed elsewhere in Europe as a potential "perfect match" for Prince William - 11 days her junior - although she has never met him.

The Swedish royal family said in a statement: "She could not stand the paparazzi. She found it extremely tough."

The princess, daughter of King Carl Gustav of Sweden, met journalists at the Swedish embassy three weeks into her stay here after paparazzi camped outside a Chelsea address where she was staying. She said then: "It is no fun to have people lying in wait for you at the door."
