Prince William a big hit with the girls in Australia

He said: "I remember my mother coming back from her time here in 1996, telling me what a profound impression this country had made on her and how much she loved Australia. Three days here and I now know why."

At the opening of Australia Day celebrations, he added: "My father had such a good time at school here and is still misty-eyed about an immortal moment when an Australian beauty planted a smack on his cheek. It's good to see this tradition is continuing." Today William visited Flowerdale, the township north of Melbourne ravaged by last year's bush fires, in which 173 people died.

After listening to survivors' stories he said: "My family, along with millions around the world, followed the events with a sense of horror which ... turned to one of deep, deep admiration for the steadfastness of the Australian people."

Commentators believe the prince's visit has given a huge boost to the royals. The Sydney Daily Telegraph said: "Had he come across as stereotypically royal, republicans would have been on a winner ... William is a nice young bloke from England."

The prince also attended the Australian Tennis Open, with Roger Federer asked to welcome him.

The player, as embarrassed as the prince, said: "Err ... Your Royal Highness, welcome to the world of tennis. Thank you for coming."
