Prince pays a tribute to cabbies

Prince Charles was today paying tribute to London's black cab drivers for the contribution they make to life in London.

He was to make his remarks while hosting a reception at Clarence House for about 120 drivers. A source said: "Black cabbies provide an iconic part of London's identity. The Prince will talk about how they are expert at their job and how he is full of admiration for their passing the Knowledge.

"He is also expected to talk about how they provide a reliable service, helping to make London safer and assisting the police in combating and deterring crime. The Prince will also reflect that they are big charity supporters."

The reception is part of Charles's campaign to celebrate unsung heroes. Most of his guests will be taxi drivers, but there will also be representatives from the main trade associations, charities and the main school teaching the Knowledge. He will travel in a black cab with representatives from the Heritage of London Trust, which helps preserve taxis.

Although Charles travels in chauffeur-driven cars, the Princess of Wales regularly used black cabs for private appointments, sometimes with William and Harry.
