Power cut two minutes before Jermain Defoe winning goal clears bars

Thousands of football fans in south London missed Jermain Defoe's winning goal against Slovenia because of a power cut.

Televisions and lights went off in Twickenham at 3.20pm — just two minutes before the Tottenham Hotspur striker scored.

England fans poured out on to streets looking for anywhere with power that was showing the match.

Traffic lights were out and the power cut had a knock-on effect on the water supply of 300,000 households and businesses.

Sam Owen, 23, a bricklayer, said: "When the power went off everyone went running up and down the road trying to find somewhere showing the match."

Angelea McNulty, 25, assistant manager of the Twickenham Tup, said: "Two minutes before the goal everything went off and customers started to leave. We lost about three quarters of our customers and are counting up how much money we lost."

Many went to the Up 'n' Under bar, which had a generator.

Manager Fredrik Johansson, 34, said: "We had so many people in here they drank us dry. There were kids standing outside trying to get a view of the screens."
