Powell: Britain will lead peace force

Britain has volunteered to lead a peace force for Afghanistan, US Secretary of State Colin Powell claimed in Paris today.

Downing Street has refused to comment on a British role in a peace force for Afghanistan, although an announcement is now expected when Mr Powell has talks with Tony Blair.

Mr Powell spoke to the media after a meeting with President Chirac of France, another major troops contributor to the UNbacked peace force. "I am pleased that the United Kingdom is willing to step forward and volunteer for a leadership role," Mr Powell said.

Britain is expected to send at least 2,000 troops. The headquarters of the 16 Air Assault Brigade and the 3rd Armoured Division have been put on short notice to move. "They will be in Kabul much quicker than most people will expect," said a senior British commander.
