In answer to such criticisms, the weeklies will point to their healthy circulations - in The Spectator's case, a record 61,000 - as proof that, whatever I say, they are still required reading among the chattering classes. But like opinion polls, circulation figures should be taken with a pinch of salt. And, as the direct-debit promoters know, subscribers may take a long time before they finally get round to cancelling. Once that happens, the decline can be swift and very difficult to reverse.
