Police seize raid gunman

This is the moment the law dramatically caught up with armed robbers in a daring high-street ambush.

Plainclothes Flying Squad detectives, some posing as binmen, swooped as the men attempted to hold up a jeweller's.

One robber was confronting staff with a handgun inside the store while another waited on a powerful motorbike as morning shoppers passed by at The Quad, Richmond.

Suddenly around a dozen waiting detectives pulled out their guns.

Several dealt with the man in the store while another officer pulled the getaway driver off the motorcycle and into the pavement. About six detectives then pounced on him and wrestled a pistol out of his possession.

Three officers gave chase down an alley to stop a third robber, thought to have been a lookout man. He was brought out into the main road and searched. All three were taken away.

One onlooker said: "It was a superb operation, like the scene of a film. It looked like they had a trap set up for the guys and they walked right into it.

"I was just going on the bus to the station and heard a thump, the kind of sickening sound you get when vehicles collide. Then I just saw this guy lying on the pavement near a motorbike. It must have been just after he was knocked off.

"In a split second, five or six burly men in caps ran out from across the road and before he could get up it was like a rugby scrum had hit him.

"In the mꬩe a pistol was back-heeled out by an officer. I don't know whether the man had tried to draw it or they fished it out of his pocket, but he was definitely struggling. There were even two armed officers dressed up as binmen standing next to push-trolleys with brooms. But it was very scary."

Two other men arrested in Windsor in connection with the attempted bank robbery on Saturday at 11am are being held by police.
