Police read murder suspect Briton his rights at pizzeria

DETAILS emerged today of the arrest of a millionaire British developer in Florida on an extradition warrant for a murder in London.

Thanos Papalexis, 36, who earlier this year hosted a fundraising gala at his ocean-front home for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, was eating with a female friend in Palm Beach when he was approached by US marshals.

Officers stood over his table at the chic Fire Rock Pizza restaurant to read him his rights. Other diners looked on in shock as he was handcuffed.

Papalexis, who claims to be the son of a Greek shipping tycoon, drives a Bentley and is known for his lavish parties, which often feature in the society pages of newspapers in Palm Beach.

He is accused of torturing and strangling caretaker Charalambos Christodoulides, 57, before hiding his body in a pit attached to a disused wine warehouse in Kilburn in 2000.

Police believe Christodoulides was attacked outside the building, dragged upstairs, tied to a chair and savagely beaten.

They think the killers then strangled him, wrapped his body in a sheet and placed two woolly hats over his face before dousing him with paint stripper in an effort to fool police sniffer dogs.

Papalexis appeared on the extradition warrant at the federal court in West Palm Beach on Monday.

According to court papers, he had wanted to develop the warehouse but could not buy it as caretaker Mr Christodoulides, a single man, was living in a flat there. As long as Papalexis was prevented from making the deal, he was losing £60,000 in interest to a loan shark.

Scotland Yard confirmed Papalexis had been arrested. Two other men are due to appear for trial at the Old Bailey next year in connection with the case.
