Police hunt for 'known' killer

A manhunt is under way for a gunman who shot and killed one man and injured two others in London's "murder mile".

Jamaican Seko Brown, 33, was shot dead and two others injured in a flat in Clapton, Hackney.

Two other men were also injured when they leapt from a second-floor window to escape the shooting.

Police believe they have identified the killer and issued an alert for the man who is thought to be known to officers. Detectives say the shooting was motivated by a row over a girlfriend.

The man killed, who was staying with friends in Clapton, was not believed to have been the intended victim.

The shooting happened early on Saturday when a man with a handgun knocked on the door of the house in Reighton Road, pushed his way inside and shot three men in the living room.

The two injured men, one 25, the other 23, are recovering in hospital today. One of the men who escaped through the window suffered cuts from broken glass, the other dislocated his shoulder.

The suspect, who is described as black, escaped in a car driven by another man.

The killing took place two streets away from where Michael Cabey, 28, was gunned down in daylight sitting on a wall in August this year.

Three men in a Ford Fiesta drove past and shot him through an open window. Mr Cabey was not involved in local gangs and police are trying to establish a motive for his death.

Today a local councillor called for more police patrols in Clapton, which has seen a dozen shootings in the past two years and become known as "murder mile".

Michael Desmond, a Labour councillor for the local Northwold ward, said: "We never see a home beat officer in the area. People are disappointed with the police response to these events. The local police argue that if someone wants someone assassinated there is little they can do about it, but I think that is giving people an open goal.

"I think if we had CCTV in the area and more local officers on the beat they would act as a deterrent and people might think twice about committing crimes like this. This is a pleasant cosmopolitan area with a lot of artists and writers and the only logical reason for these shootings is the lack of CCTV and patrolling police.

"I think we need more people on the ground getting local intelligence and something like a police sub-station to give police a presence in the area."
