Plot claims as Banks steps down

Former Sports Minister Tony Banks is quitting as an MP, sparking a bitter political battle.

Furious activists in his West Ham constituency suspect a plot by party bosses to parachute a "Blair babe" into the working-class seat.

Mr Banks, 61, one of Westminster's most colourful characters, formally announced his resignation to members last night. "I've gone 60 years of age and feel I have got a bit stale after more than 20 years as the local MP," he said. "I'm getting jaded and someone younger and more enthusiastic should now be given the chance." His decision infuriated members because Mr Banks stood for reselection only a few months ago and promised to serve for another full Parliament.

Some suspect the timing will help Labour chiefs impose their preferred successor, possibly by insisting on an all-woman shortlist.

There have been controversies in the past with MPs accused of taking peerages in return for quitting on the eve of an election.

An all-woman shortlist would exclude three potential local successors, all black or Asian men. They include branch chairman Terry Paul and local councillors Unmesh Desai and Joe Ejiofor.

But it would help Jo Coles, a close ally and assistant to Labour rising star Yvette Cooper, a minister in John Prescott's department. One local insider said: "Jo Coles approached party officials here nearly a week ago - before Tony Banks announced his resignation. Either she is psychic or there is something fishy going on."

Mr Banks told local officials of his decision last Thursday, but as quickly as Monday a letter arrived from Labour general secretary Matt Carter saying the seat might be reserved for a woman candidate.

Local officials may challenge the decision.
